What are the NowPatient Healthcare Calculators?

Healthcare Calculators are evidence-based clinical tools designed to support your wellbeing through personalized assessments and action plans. The service includes three key resources: the Heart Age Calculator to assess cardiovascular risk, the Quit Smoking Plan for smoking cessation support, and the Mind Plan for mental health management. Each calculator provides tailored insights and actionable guidance based on your individual information.

How do I access the Healthcare Calculators?

Navigate to the ‘Healthcare Calculators’ section of your account homepage. You will see three Service Cards: Calculate Your Heart Age, Quit Smoking Plan, and Your Mind Plan.

Are Healthcare Calculators free?

Yes. Healthcare Calculators are a free service available to all registered NowPatient users.

Are Healthcare Calculators safe to use?

Yes. Healthcare Calculators are evidence-based clinical tools developed using clinically validated methodologies. They are intended to complement professional medical advice, not replace it.

What does the Heart Age Calculator do?

The Heart Age Calculator assesses your cardiovascular health and compares your heart’s biological age to your actual age. If your heart age is older than your actual age, it indicates increased cardiovascular risk.

How do I use the Heart Age Calculator?

Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Calculate Your Heart Age Service Card in the Healthcare Calculators section of your account homepage.

  2. From the Options menu, select ‘Calculate Heart Age’.

  3. Complete the health assessment questions including blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking status, and medical history.

  4. Submit your responses.

  5. View your Heart Age result and personalized risk assessment.

What should I do if my Heart Age is higher than my actual age?

If your Heart Age is higher than your actual age, it indicates increased cardiovascular risk. The calculator will provide personalized recommendations covering lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), risk factors to discuss with your doctor, and monitoring recommendations. It is important that you discuss your Heart Age result with your doctor at your next appointment, especially if it is significantly higher than your actual age.

How often should I update my Heart Age assessment?

NowPatient recommends updating annually for routine monitoring, every 3–6 months if you are implementing lifestyle changes, when you have new blood pressure or cholesterol readings, and before any NowPatient Service Consultations.

What is the Quit Smoking Plan?

The Quit Smoking Plan helps you create a tailored strategy for quitting smoking based on your individual smoking habits and circumstances. It covers your personalized quit date, strategies to manage cravings and triggers, nicotine replacement therapy options, behavioural support techniques, resources and support services, and progress tracking tools.

How do I create my Quit Smoking Plan?

Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Quit Smoking Plan Service Card in the Healthcare Calculators section of your account homepage.

  2. From the Options menu, select ‘Create Plan’.

  3. Answer questions about your smoking habits, triggers, previous quit attempts, and motivation level.

  4. Submit your responses.

  5. View your personalized quit plan with recommended strategies.

What does my Quit Smoking Plan include?

Your plan includes:

  • Your personalized quit date recommendation

  • Strategies to manage cravings and triggers

  • Nicotine replacement therapy options

  • Behavioural support techniques

  • Resources and support services

  • Progress tracking tools

How do I update my Quit Smoking Plan?

You can update your Quit Smoking Plan at any time by returning to the Quit Smoking Plan Service Card. NowPatient recommends updating it if your quit attempt is unsuccessful and you want to try again; when you have successfully quit and want to focus on maintenance strategies; if your circumstances or triggers change; or after discussing options with your doctor or cessation specialist.

What is the Mind Plan?

The Mind Plan helps you assess your mental wellbeing and provides personalized strategies for managing stress, anxiety, mood, and overall mental health. It includes your current wellbeing assessment, personalized coping strategies, self-care recommendations, stress management techniques, resources for additional support, and guidance on when to seek professional help.

How do I create my Mind Plan?

Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Your Mind Plan Service Card in the Healthcare Calculators section of your account homepage.

  2. Select ‘Create Plan’.

  3. Complete the mental health assessment questions about your mood, stress levels, sleep, and daily functioning.

  4. Submit your responses.

  5. View your personalized mental health plan and recommendations.

What does my Mind Plan include?

Your plan includes:

  • Your current wellbeing assessment

  • Personalized coping strategies

  • Self-care recommendations

  • Stress management techniques

  • Resources for additional support

  • Guidance on when to seek professional help

When should I seek professional help for mental health?

You should contact your doctor or a mental health professional if you experience persistent low mood or anxiety lasting more than two weeks; thoughts of self-harm or suicide; inability to manage daily activities; significant changes in sleep, appetite, or behaviour; or symptoms that worsen despite self-management strategies.

If you are in crisis or having thoughts of suicide, contact emergency services (UK 999; US 911) immediately or call a crisis helpline.

How often should I use the Mind Plan?

NowPatient recommends using the Mind Plan monthly to track your mental wellbeing, when experiencing changes in stress or mood, before any NowPatient Service Consultations, and when implementing new coping strategies.

Can I share my calculator results with my doctor?

Yes. Your results can be viewed on your device during appointments and used to facilitate discussions about your health. NowPatient encourages you to discuss your Heart Age, Quit Smoking Plan progress, and Mind Plan assessments with your doctor, especially if results indicate health risks.

What are the limitations of Healthcare Calculators?

The Heart Age Calculator requires accurate blood pressure and cholesterol readings and may not account for all individual risk factors. The Quit Smoking Plan depends on individual commitment and circumstances and may need adjustment. The Mind Plan is not a substitute for professional mental health diagnosis or treatment, and serious mental health conditions require professional intervention. All calculators are designed to complement, not replace, professional medical advice and care.
